Profile

I am currently a Research Scientist in the Science Division of DEC. I am currently under contract working as an invertebrate taxonomist for the Pilbara Biological Survey. My work involves identifying terrestrial invertebrates from the Pilbara, semi-arid, and Wheatbelt regions of Western Australia, in addition to liaising with external taxonomic invertebrate specialists at other institutions.

Expertise

  • Taxonomy, distribution, ecology and conservation status of Western Australian invertebrates, in particular, beetles and spiders.
  • Curation of invertebrate and vertebrate specimens.

Brief CV

Academic Qualifications

BSc (UWA, Zoology/Botany).

MSc (ECU,Envir. Management) 2001

Aspects of the Taxonomy and Ecology of the Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Assemblage of the Swan Coastal Plain (with particular reference to habitat fragmentation and the Quindalup Dune System).

Research Experience

My research has centered around the surveying and documentation of terrestrial invertebrate assemblages in a variety of habitats and environments:

  • Invertebrate fauna of dry salt lake environments (Western Australian Wheatbelt, in collaboration with Brad Durrant, July 2002 – January 2004).
  • Arachnida of the Western Australian Wheatbelt (Biodiversity Survey of the Agricultural Zone, in collaboration with Harvey et al, February 1998 – January 2004).
  • Terrestrial ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) assemblage structure and conservation status in remnant native bushland within the Perth Metropolitan Area (MSc Thesis, 1995 – 2001)
  • Arachnida from Mount Dale, Northern Jarrah forest (ECU, 2002)
  • Collection of foliage invertebrates on various Wheatbelt Eucalyptus species (Curtin Uni, 1999)
  • Identification and abundance trials of Mediterranean fruit fly larvae in export citrus (Agriculture Western Australia, 1997)
