Profile

I am a Research Scientist in DPAW’s Science Division. My recent research has focused on the impacts of logging activities in the jarrah and karri forests of south-west WA. This research examined two distinct areas: hollows used by animals in jarrah and marri trees, and the impacts of fire and log extraction on soils of the jarrah and karri forests. My earlier research work was on the silviculture and hydrology of the jarrah forest.

Expertise

  • Woody debris on the forest floor
  • Seed production in jarrah forest
  • Hollows used by native fauna in jarrah and marri trees.
  • Soil disturbance and logging, fire and soil organic matter.
  • Leaf area and leaf area index measurement, including point quadrat techniques.
  • The age of jarrah and marri trees.
  • The use of herbicides to control jarrah and marri regrowth.

Research Experience

My career commenced with a technical officer position. I worked on the design and construction of ventilated chambers, huge installations used to measure the transpiration of individual jarrah and marri trees. This was a period of wide ranging technical challenges and achievements which gave me a strong background in instrument use, application, and development.

I then worked on techniques for estimating leaf surface area in the jarrah forest. Initially developing allometric relationships between leaf area and tree and crown attributes, I applied these both to measure leaf area, and to validate broad scale remote techniques, such as hemispherical photography and remote sensing using the Geoscan multispectral scanner.

For a brief period I worked on a number of stem injection trials of the herbicides, Roundup (glyphosate) and Tordon Timber Control (picloram and triclopyr). I identified the dose mortality response of jarrah and marri trees to these herbicides, and the environmental factors affecting their effectiveness. I have also conducted research on the cost and effectiveness of various herbicide application systems.

Since 1994 I have occupied a Research Scientist position. In this role I have studied the occurrence of hollows that are used by arboreal fauna in the jarrah forest. This has included work on tree age and the age at which hollows form, the internal dimensions of hollows used by various arboreal fauna, the relationship between tree age, size, and crown form, and the occurrence of hollows, and the length of time that trees retained after logging to provide this habitat function, will remain standing. My most recent research has examined the effects of fire frequency on soil organic matter, the effect of soil compaction of karri tree growth and the application of Montreal Indicators 4.1d and 4.1e.

Projects

  • Evaluation of key soil indicators of sustainability in Australian mediterranean forests (Indicators 4.1d, 4.1e).
  • Comparison of the cost-effectiveness of two methods of application of glyphosate herbicide to jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) standing trees and cut stumps.
